The knee is a complex hinge joint made up of 3 compartments covered in articular cartilage and held together by 4 major ligaments.
The joint also contains 2 menisci or ‘cartilages’ that act as shock absorbers. Symptoms, whether from a sports injury or from the beginnings of degenerative change, may involve one or more of the aforementioned structures.
Diagnosis of the cause of knee pain involves careful clinical examination and use of investigations including x-rays and MRI scans. Some knee problems are amenable to simple physiotherapy and rehabilitation. However, if symptoms persist surgical intervention such as ‘keyhole’ knee surgery or even knee replacement may be advised.
If you are suffering knee pain, stiffness of the knee joint or discomfort of any description why not book an appointment with the South West’s orthopaedic experts.
